I'm about to change oil for the first time on a recently acquired '32 4-cylinde`without an oil filter. What is the correct amount of oil for these engines - 4 or 5 quarts? Besides not having an oil filter, are there any other pointers to know about changing oil on these engines? Drain plug issues, etc? What are your suggestions for brand and weight of oil in the northeast for winter lay-up? Should we be concerned with the lack of Zinc in modern motor oil? Thank you.

Five quarts when it was new, 4 1/2 quarts for an oil change (some is retained in the engine block and in the tray in the oil pan). 10W40 or 30 would be a good choice or just plain 30W. You can Google sources for oil with zinc additives.

It is true that these older flathead engines have softer valve springs which provide less pressure on the tappets and cam lobes than the high performance OHV flat tappet engines of the 1950's and later. Flathead or OHV or OHC flat tappet engines produce sliding friction at the cam lobe to tappet interface. The modern engines have rollers which contact the cam lobes so they do not require the zinc and phosphorous to reduce wear at this interface. Since these additives shorten the lives of catalytic converters over time, they have been eliminated from the modern oils to meet current EPA emissions standards.. Modern oils with API service ratings of SM or higher do not contain the zinc additive package. These modern oils do not provide sufficient anti-wear characteristics for the older engines which have sliding friction in their valvetrains. If you use a modern oil in these older engines and you want to minimize valvetrain wear, use of a ZDDP additive is required. This message was edited by carcrazy on 11-19-21 @ 10:27 PM

Oil change recommendations: Use a good name brand modern detergent SAE 30 motor oil, like Pennzoil, with Red Line Engine Oil Break-In Additive. This additive contains the proper amount of the ZDDP to minimize valvetrain wear. Follow the instructions on the bottle for how much to add. Be sure to subtract the amount of additive you use from the total amount of oil you put in the crankcase to avoid over filling it.
