Barn find v8 34 coupe. Replacing spark plug wires, the replacement wires (as did the ones in distributor cap) I can’t get to stay in appropriate hole. How do you do this? Is it necessary to take radiator to get in there? Any advice is appreciated

Not sure of your question. Please elaborate further. In any case though, removal of the radiator should never be required to work on any part of the ignition system. Alan

It is not necessary to remove the radiator to work on the distributor. To replace the spark plug wires first move the bale which holds the outer cap to the side of the distributor, remove the outer cap and the distributor terminal plate as an assembly. The terminal plate is retained to the outer cap by a rubber O-ring. Remove the O-ring and separate the terminal plate from the outer cap. Remove the old spark plug wires. Thread the new spark plug wires through the outer cap and place them into the correct holes in the distributor terminal plate and install the outer cap over the terminal plate. Install a new O-ring and place the assembly of terminal plate, wires and outer cap onto the side of the distributor and retain it with the bale so that the assembly is mounted tightly to the distributor. Repeat this procedure on the other side of the distributor. Note that there are locating tabs on the outer caps and the terminal plates which must be properly indexed to allow the assemblies to be mounted correctly on the distributor. Thank you. After I removed the outer cap (no o ring), the distributor plate is stuck in housing. That’s the problem

Thank you for your guidance. Please excuse me if I use the wrong terms, as I’m not well versed in older fords. There’s a bale which holds the outer cap, both of which came off easily. As soon as I popped the outer cap, the spark plug wires spilled out like they were spring loaded. I replaced all the spark plug wires and tried “plugging them in to the appropriate hole “ on the distributor plate (plate is stuck in place). They do not lock in, as soon as I let go the fall out. I bought replacement wires from C.W. moss ford, and they are right length etc..... This message was edited by robertbarclay43 on 8-23-21 @ 7:25 AM

Sounds like you are making progress. To remove the distributor terminal plates from the sides of the distributor, use a rubber hammer and gently tap along the outside edge of the plate in an outward direction until it comes off.

Unless you have a good reason such as wanting to see the condition of the inside of the terminal plates or you suspect the fault lies with those plates and not the wires , you do not need to remove the inner terminal plates. Have you tried spreading the sides of the ends of the wires where they plug into the inner terminal plates? The original wires had a small raised area on the circumference of the metal fitting on the ends of the wires that mated to recesses in the terminal cap which provided for a tight fit.

I thank you both for your help. Last night I managed to remove both “discs” by cleaning the gap between distributor and the discs. Once removed I was able to push the wires into the appropriate hole with greater force and they all locked in. There both back in place(in same position, there’s a key preventing it from being put in otherwise) and spark plug wires are complete! I am looking forward to continued learning on this diamond in the rough, thank you both again for taking time to answer my question
