They were intended to be painted black. There are some folks that believe this was not always the case. Still, no proof has ever been offered up to counter the "always black". I do know covers went through at minimum a couple of changes. Prior to mid 1939, the "face" of the cover was rather flat. Then, a contour was designed to the front of the cover to allow a bit more room for the wires. I think, but am not certain, that the three outlets (design) was changed sometime after 1941allowing a bit more room for the harnesses to 'escape".

Mike , that GMC pump could be converted to a ford 34 to early 36 pump with a bottom 1/2 change from a 34 to 48 bottom 1/2 or if bolt flange is correct for 34-48 just change the lever for ford cup type. The inlet & outlet holes will be in a diff position unfortunely but could be made to operate on a ford. ken ct.

There's also a kidney cover with two outlets(bottom and side, none on the top). Mounts with three holes just like the others.

I have several from 1939 ( later style )that are in original colors. They have not been repainted. I would say they were the same color as the firewall.

So a purchaser could always change the color if he wanted. ken ct.

I need to make a correction. #1 should have read Early 1939 Ford used until Oct. 1938 not 39.

Ken The one on my 42 was definitely black and the firewall was blue. It is my understanding that parts that were bolted on that were steel were painted to keep them from rusting in storage. The interior of the engine compartment was considered utilitarian and not for show. So why go to the trouble of inventorying kc covers in all body colors?
