Topic: Fan belt replacement

I know that I can loosen the generator and slip the belt on and tighten by putting tension on the generator. However I can not see how to get the other belt on for the water pumps. This is my first 239 flathead so I am sure that I must loosen something to slip the belt over the water pump pulleys, but I can not see it. Need a little help.

thanks

You have to loosen the two bolts that hold the fan bracket to the engine. I think they are 5/8".

As stated, you need to loosen both gen. and fan. To install belts, I use a screw type valve spring compressor and put it under the gen. to hold tension while I tighten the gen bolt then I install the fan belt and use a small pry bar to put tension on it. Making sure the belts have about 1/2" of flex each way when done.

As has been said, the fan bracket has to be loosened from the generator bracket to drop down. Then the generator bracket has to be loosened to drop down to install the belts. Then the generator moved back up and held in place at right tension while tightening its single bolt. (See attached picture showing how I lever it up with the handle of a crescent wrench right against the bracket with left hand while tightening bolt with right hand.) Then the fan can be lifted up to proper tightness with left hand while tightening one bolt with right hand to hold in place then tighten the other bolt.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I can now tackle the job.

Your initial description referring to a different belt for the pumps than the one for the generator suggests you may need this picture that shows one belt for both generator and pumps and a separate one for the fan alone.
