Topic: 1947 torque tube

Hello, sorry for the basic question, but I am just starting to work on my 1947 super deluxe and wonder what is the torque tub end inside it? Is it just a tube that covers the driveshaft or is there more?

Thank you in advance.

The tube has the drive shaft, speedometer gear, center bearing and part of the universal joint. Its purpose is to keep the rear axle and housing in the correct position under load.

Here is a diagram of the 35-48 passenger and 35-41 commercial rear axle including the torque tube and all that includes. Part # 4658 is the bearing at the center of the torque tube TomO referred to.

The vehicle is actually pushed by the torque tube against the back of the transmission, not by any push through the springs or suspension. They are all just "floating" kept in place by the track bar. The radius rods help transfer some of the push to the front end of the torque tube rather than stressing its attachment to the differential alone to provide that push.
