I have a 1936 Ford 4-door Convertible with the slant back exposed rear spare. Can anyone tell me how many of this early car were built before Ford switched to the "hump back" car with a trunk?

The V-8 Album shows 5,601 of the "1936 Deluxe Convertible Sedan 68-740" were produced. The picture shows the slant back version. A "Trunk Model" photograph is also shown, but no number of units is listed.

I think 5,601 is the total number of Convertible Sedans built (slant back and hump back combined), and I believe all were Deluxe models. I would like to find out the quantities made of each body style. Peter This message was edited by vintageautomobilia on 2-10-16 @ 3:54 PM

Francis-DeAngelis list 5005 as the production number with the changeover taking place in April (mid year). One could infer that the numbers were about equal for each.

Surely, after all these years, and since many people love to know how many of each body style were built, someone must know exactly how many of each were built. Peter

Hi Everyone, vintageautomobilia, I agree with Cliff. Al Casteen has been working on this question for quite a while. He's trying to figure when the production changed from slant-back to trunk-back for the 1936 Convertible Sedan like yours. You can contact him by Private Message (PM) on a different website, The FordBarn. Here's his member page, http://fordbarn.com/forum/member.php?u=717 I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from you, and will want to collect information about your car for his project. -VT/JeffH

Here is an excerpt from a summary of Al Casteen's findings as of Dec, 2011. We have now found, with your help, 188 1936 Ford convertible sedans. 76 are slantbacks and 112 are trunk models. The lowest slantback body ID tag is 113 and the highest is 2324. The lowest trunk body ID tag is 2497 and the highest is 5581. Al Casteen 12/11 It appears that the transition between slant back and trunk style conv sedans happened between body tag numbers 2324 and 2497

Thanks Don, I've been in contact with Al Casteen and he and you have been very helpful. Unfortunately not every car (mine included) still has its body number tag. Too bad Henry didn't stamp it on a more permanent part of the car! Peter
