According to "The Early Ford V8 As Henry Built It" both engines were used throughout the 1936 year. Charlie Stephens

I think Don Rogers can do by date, but I think they were mixed in production from late '35. The only sure way to ID an LB is to pull the crank case... But you know that already. Alan

I have a 36 with the LB engine and the letters "LB" are stamped on the block on the surface the intake manifold sits on. The stamp is on the driver's side at the front and appears to be done by hand as opposed to part of the machining process.

Alanwoodieman, With a March/April build date, there is no easy way to tell if the engine was babbit or insert. You have about a 50/50 chance of it being either one.

TNation, The location and type of LB identification you describe is consistent with reports of how it was done at the factory in some cases. Unfortunately, it is also consistent with reports of how fraudulent LB identification has been done. There is no external clue on an engine that can be relied on to identify an LB block. Alan
