I have a rebuilt split core" radiator in my 1940 convertible club coupe and want to know if I can pressurize the system with a 4 lb radiator cap without harming the cooling system. I have new Bob Drake water pumps and 170 degree thermostats. My intent is to further insulate myself from overheating situations by increasing the boiling point. Is a 4 lb cap safe for my car?

I have a 1941 with a split radiator. I have been running a 4 lb. cap for 10 years with no problem. I have 160 degree thermostats and no overheating.

The 40 radiator has the overflow coming out of the top of the tank and the cap is below it on the slanted portion of the top tank. A pressure cap will not provide pressure unless the overflow is modified or you use a pressure relief valve like the one from Skip Haney in the over flow. I have been using the pressure relief valve and a 4 lb pressure cap for about 15 years now and it has worked fine for me. I installed the pressure relief valve at the bottom of the overflow tube using flexible fuel line. Tom
