Can anyone let me know what the following represents? This is stamped on the firewall, engine well below the windshield: NR703 3D 17A3 The patent plate is not readable. My VIN # is: B1NR109049 thanks

Jules, That is your cowl code. These codes are explained in the V-8 Club's 1494-1950-1951 Book, available on this website. It is a good book to have if you own a '51 Ford. These codes can be difficult to decipher because they may be hard to read and may have been inconsistent between assembly plants. But here goes: NR indicates your '51 was build at the Richmond, VA assembly plant. 70B indicates that the body style was Custom Deluxe Tudor. Could that 3 actually be a B? Is your car a Custom Deluxe Tudor? Next the paint code. I don't see a paint code for 3, but B is Sheridan Blue. Again, could this be a B? D means that the interior fabric was Custom Broadcloth with a blue stripe. 17A indicates that your vehicle was built on January 17. The unit number that day was #3. Hope this helps. Ken, you are correct, the 3 is actually a B, the vertical line for the "B" is difficult to see. Yes, it's a custom deluxe.....thanks for your help. My grandfather bought this vehicle new, been in family; I've had it in storage since late 1990's and now doing a refrub; drivetrain and all, know enough to be dangerous, should be a long and interesting project. One thing for sure, I'll be a lot smarter when I'm done.
