What's the trick to removing the bumper pads above the ft axle? Do they just thread into a stud in the frame or is there a nut buried in the frame pocket???

If memory serves me correctly, they are held in place by a nut inside the frame. You may have to dig out a lot of dirt and crud to find it.

They are in fact held on with a nut. It's not easy to get a wrench on the nut, so make sure the kids aren't around for the words you may say while trying to get them off.
