There is only one wire at the gas tank and it hooks up to the sending unit.

Thanks for the reply!! The tank has been repaired and has a good coat of black finish which I thought would interfear with the ground factor. If so should a seperate ground wire to the body be used???

Yes. Anytime there is a possibility of a poor ground, run another to a known ground. This advice especially include headlights. Alan

Run an extra ground wire from one of the sending unit screws to the frame. Make sure it is contacting clean metal.
