Topic: What is the correct postion of split in piston

I’m installing new rings in my 35 engine. The engine has the original flat top pistons with the split on the side (skirt) of the piston. I think the pistons were in the block wrong in relation to the split in the skirt. Looking at the front of the engine, the pistons 1 thru 4 on the left side of the engine are installed in the engine with the piston split pointing towards the valves. The pistons 5 thru 8 on the right side of the engine have the pistons installed with the split pointing towards the outside of the engine or away from the valves. Should the split on all pistons be pointing towards the valves or away?

The piston/rod assembly should be installed with the numbers on the rods facing toward the front of the engine. Unless you plan to rebush the rods and refit the wrist pins, put the pistons back in the block as said above. The direction of the split isn't critical. Be sure to check and adjust the ring end gaps to between .012 and .017, with the ring to groove clearance on the top ring between .0015 and .0030. The rest of the rings should have a clearance of .0010 to .0025. Also, stagger the ring gaps as you install the pistons. Oil the pistons well before installation.
