This hubcap turned up at the Central National Meet flea market in Springfield Illinois. I have been unable to locate a photograph anywhere of a Ford wearing one of these. What year is it? Does anyone know the correct part number? Could it be Mercury?

From a Meet judging perspective, is an original 1937 Ford Spider cap correct for a 1938 Ford? I am guessing it is. If a dealer had this cap in stock at the beginning of the 1938 model year, then it is conceivable that they could be affixed to a 1938 car by the dealer at the time of delivery. Would a 1938 Ford owner suffer a point deduction at a meet for having a 1937 Spider accessory hubcap? . . . 78-73B This message was edited by TonyM on 10-19-14 @ 12:56 PM

Tony, that's an interesting question. My interpretation agrees with yours, but with one important exception: The accessory was not authorized for the '38, and in fact was replaced by the new accessory. While the '37 would have been available, it's a stretch to say that a dealer would have made that substitution in the face of those facts. Alan

Alan, I have found the answer in the club's 1938-1939 Ford Book--page 7-34: "...they were dealer installed items, so an earlier design could have been installed out of dealer stock. Also, as noted below, sometimes the design that was supposed to be used for a particular year was released late, so the previous year design continued to be installed in practice." Further down the page: "b. 78-1130-B [1937 style] This design was authorized for 1938 but not for 1939. It mimics the appearance of 1937 hubcaps with raised V-8 and circle." Tony, that's good work, and I should have caught that myself. However, none of the V8 restoration books are viewed as Judging Standards, the last word always being reserved for the JSC. That said, I'd think most Judges would accept it if a copy of the book were available at the time. Alan

Grant, The listing shows a change of base number for some unknown reason. The 1938 spyder is listed as 81A-18140, and is authorized for both 1938 and 1939. This from the '38-'39 book referenced above by Tony. Alan
