Topic: Ignition Problems?

  My V8-60 engine was running at about 2000 RPM without missing a beat on an engine test stand for about 19 minutes before it suddenly quit. It is equipped with a 12 Volt negative ground electrical system, GM style alternator, NAPA internal resistance ignition coil, coil adapter kit, and a radiator-mounted electrical cooling fan. The coil is mounted upside down on the test stand and has a 42 inch long secondary lead wire to the distributor. At the time of engine shut down the coolant temperature had stabilized between 160 and 170 degrees F, fuel was present in the carburetor, and the coil felt very hot to the touch. What is the easiest way to troubleshoot the ignition system to locate the cause of the problem?

  Check for spark at the plugs if no spark, check for spark at the coil high tension lead, if no spark check for voltage to the input to the coil. if voltage is present, check the points for opening and closing.
