My 1939 Ford Rear Hubs (Brake Drums) have two groves in the bearing/seal cavity. One just above the wheel bearing and one above the grease seal. On one side the snap ring was above the bearing and none in the groove above the seal. On the other side no snap ring above the bearing but one above the seal. Which is correct? Should both have snap rings? The catalogs I have looked at only list a snap ring for the seal - Thanks for any help or insight - V8JR

There should be only one groove (recess) and it is for the snap ring, to the outside of the seal. The second groove your seeing may be a small step in the hub inner diameter and not a recess.

Some hubs do, in fact, have two grooves, but as said above, the one on the outboard side of the grease seal is the one to use. Be sure the lock ring is fully seated all the way around by cleaning out the groove before the ring is installed.

One other little thing you may want to do... grind the end of the ring so (next time) removal is easier.
