Topic: 1938 ford pickup engine overheating problem

I have a 1938 ford truck with a rebuilt late 40's mercury engine that overheats when parked or moving slow. Have tried everything I can think of to fix the problem from new radiator, 18" electric blower fan in front of the radiator, with and without thermostats, adjusting timing nothing seems to make a difference. I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone may have. Thanks, Tony

If it only heats up at stop lights and slow moving, then your electric fan isn't doing it's intended job. A pulling fan from behind the radiator is much more efficient than a pusher. Insure that the pusher fan is flush up against the radiator is about all you can do there.

Your later engine is likely not set up as original for the truck, causing that engines fan to be inefficient. The generator mount fan original to the truck would do better for you. Failing that, consider fabricating a fan shroud that works with the lower fan mounting.

That is usually Nature's way of saying "time for a new radiator"!

You might also check the amount of coolant in your system. It should have close to 22 quarts. I agree with Alan about changing the fan location.
