Topic: Year ID of 59A engine

  Trying to figure the model year for a 59A flathead.
On the attached clutch housing there is a cast "59" and above it is"E5733"(it could be E5788). Does this casting tell when block was cast or help determine year?

Still gotta lot to learn.

  Bud, the 59A block was made from 46 to 48. It is the most favored block of the flathead era. Nothing on your block casting that I know of will identify it further.

  Thanks Alan. I thought for some reason the 24 bolt head engine and the "59" engine were the same designation and as such, the "59" engine was built from late 38 to 48. So, the "59" designation was used starting in 45. Is that correct?

Your assumption is correct. The 59AB engine was produced starting with the 46 model year or in late 45. The previous engine used in 41 and 42 was 81A. The difference is the 41-42 engine has a 3 1/16" bore whereas the 59AB engine has a 3 3/16" bore

  There was a 59 block and a 59A block, but there is no 59AB block. 59AB is the designation on the heads after they were no longer left or right secific.

Yeah I mis-stated, the correct block designation is 59 or 59A. The heads had 59AB cast in them. However a head for the right hand side with two tapped bosses for the heater connection and temperature sender connection actually came out in 42 with the 81 style A and Ford still cast in the the head. This head cannot be used on a 59 block with out some machining to provide valve clearance.

As I understand it the E5733 cast in the block was a foundry marking to indicate which pattern had been used to make the sand mold for the casting.

  Richard, the 59 series blocks, which include all the prefix and suffix letters (A; AB; L; C), are generally preferred for several important reasons. The block is beefier to accommodate the then standard 3 3/16" bore; Main bearing size was larger (as opposed to 21 stud blocks); Hardened valve seats; Improved water passages eliminating some previous hot spots and retained sand; And the retention of the front mounted distributor, any one of which is superior to the side mount.
