Topic: 1940 Standard production numbers

ivfd4    -- 03-18-2012 @ 3:32 PM
I have a 1940 Ford Standard 2dr sedan. I have found production numbers for deluxe models, but cant find anything on standard numbers. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The V-8 Album, published in 1985 by the Early Ford V8 Club, shows the following numbers for Standard Fords:

5-Window Coupe -- 33,693
Business Coupe -- 16,785
Tudor Sedan -- 150,933
Fordor Sedan -- 25,545
Station Wagon -- 4,469

(I have not yet seen a Standard Station Wagon)

There was no standard wagon in 1940.

There ABSOLUTELY was a 40 Std wagon. On this one you are incorrect.

Here is a link to a picture of one of Nick Alexander's 40 Std woodies before the big sale. This one happens to have a Marmon Harrington 4WD.

Oops! Now it is confirmed, I don't know everything!

Are there 1940 production numbers for 60hp units? Also were any Deluxe 40's with 60hp engines?

alanwoodieman    -- 03-18-2012 @ 8:16 PM
I also had a standard wagon (40) but I have also seen a picture with about 25 standard and one delux wagon painted army green and heading to Canada for the war effort.

42wagon    -- 03-19-2012 @ 4:26 AM
According to Lorin Sorensen's book Famous Ford Woodies there were 3,255 standard station wagons built in 1940 with 85hp V8 engines and 2 with the 60 hp engines.

For comparison there were 8,114 1940 deluxe wagons built with the 85hp V8 and 354 with the 95hp V8.

Must have been quite a difference performance wise between a wagon with a 60 hp engine and one with a 95 hp engine.

I have the actual production figures for all of 1940. It is broken down by model as well as respective engine installation.
Yes, there were 161 DeLuxe models (total) equipped with 60H.P. engines. There were both DeLuxe and "Standard" models equipped with the 95 H.P. (Merc) engines.

Alan, I'm right in there with you.

Before Kube's post, I would have said that there were no 1940 DeLuxe cars with a 60 HP engine. I knew that there the wagon was built in both the DeLuxe and Standard models and that there were some Standard wagons built with 60HP engine and that both Standard and vehicles were built with the 95 HP engine, but the 60 HP in a DeLuxe car suprised me.

"TomO" I can't say for certain why Ford installed some 60's in to Deluxe cars. i can only offer a guess... perhaps an attempt to attract more sales? Regardless of the reason, with only 161 units built, it obviously was not well received.

Tom & Mike, Was it the Sedan Delivery that was DeLuxe only? I'm too lazy to look it up!

I'm not TomO or Kube but I used to have a 40 Sed del and all the documentation I saw said it was only available as a deluxe. I think you are right. I am currently working on a del wagon.

Wow, you guys are the best!!! Thanks for the info. I'm new here, is this club for restored models or are street rods welcome?? Mine is a street rod. Old school looks with black paint, flames, and red/wht tuck & roll. But new technology including Must II type frt end with p/s, power disc brakes, Camaro 307 engine,700R4. Vintage a/c & heat, power windows, cruise contols and heated seats are planned. Going to the shop for body & paint end of May, hope to have it back by Sept 1st and completed by next spring. Thanks again, Steve

Well, we have members who are racers, hot rodders, street rodders and even some that do not presently own an early Ford. The focus of the club is to encourage the preservation of these 32-53's in as original condition as practicable. That is the "collective focus", but obviously not necessarily a dogma that all members must ascribe to.

You posed an interesting question in the beginning that had a lot of us scratching our heads. In the process of responding, many of us (myself included) learned a lot regarding
engine options on Standard and Deluxe versions of the 40.

Any question is acceptable to this group, but remember where most of us are coming from.
I'd stay from questions regarding Small-Block Chevy's for example, unless you are willing to put up with smart-assed answers.

Deuce Roadster, Thanx for helping me save face! A Sedan Delivery is just a metal station wagon without windows right?

Alan

Steve, Looks like your car was made in the Deluxe version too (see image below). (Coincidentally, the owner of the car pictured is also named Steve.)

The '40 convertible was a Deluxe only model. I wonder if anyone ordered one of those with a V8 60?

kubes40    -- 03-22-2012 @ 6:25 AM
Convertibles with the 60 H.P.? Yes, fourteen units were built as such.

ivfd4    -- 03-22-2012 @ 2:37 PM
Deluxe 40, thanks for the pic. That is very similar to how I picture my car when done. Yes I will keep any questions centered on the Ford features. I am a purist when it comes the body restoration. I want it to look just like when Henry made it. Nothing irks me more to see flush mount taillights, headlight doors, frenched license plates, etc. I had a 40 in 1972 and now that I'm retired I am building one just like it. I think the 40 body style is one of the best looking cars ever made.

trjford8    -- 03-22-2012 @ 6:30 PM
Steve, there are a few of us here that have old Fords with modern running gear( I have two 40's, a coupe and tudor both standards and a 37 coupe), but as Stroker said it's mostly flathead guys, but anyone is welcome. Just like you I do not like to see anyone modifying the exterior of these old Fords. They looked good just the way they came from the factory.

deluxe40    -- 03-22-2012 @ 7:56 PM
Kube: Thanks for the production numbers on convertible V8 60 cars. That is something to contemplate.

ivfd4: My understanding is that the archetypical black '40 Tudor with flames was owned by Bob McCoy of San Diego and appeared on the the '58 Hot Rod Annual cover. Word is that the car turned up later as a purple Kustom. My preference is for the original shape and trim. However, any time I drive my '40 on the L.A. freeways I start thinking about modern running gear.
