Replacing front end parts on my '48. Grasping the pitman arm there is about a 1/16 play in the straight ahead position and increases to 3/16 well into a turn position. All comments welcome. Carl

Carl: You can try adjusting the steering gear. If the play is not caused by excessive wear of the worm and sector, or the sector shaft bushing, it is worth a try. Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels are exactly straight ahead. Raise the front of the vehicle until the weight is removed from the front wheels. Remove the sector shaft thrust screw lock nut in the center of the cover. Turn the sector shaft thrust screw clockwise until it is tight, then back it off about 1/8 turn. Install the lock washer. If the lock washer doesn't fit, turn the screw back slightly. Do not tighten the screw. Install the lock nut. There is a high spot in the worm gear that tightens the steering when centered, so don't be concerned if the steering feels a bit loose off center. If you can feel or see any up and down play in the sector shaft by pulling on the pitman arm, the box will have to come out for a rebuild.
