how does the steering box come off the column?

Which model '35 do you have? Sometimes the method of removing the steering box and column depends on which model/vehicle type you have.

you might have to loosen the steering box on the frame and the floor boards, and the steering upper column ignition switch and lock frm the dash board,,
depending what body style you have,
REMOVE the light switch at the bottom,
remove the c-clip holding the light switch rod on.
slide the light switch out,
becarefull not to bend the lightswitch rod,
remove the steering wheel,
make sure the key is in the unlocked position,
loosen the clamp at the bottom, slide the column off the box, the steering shaft will stay attached to the steering box,
hope this helps 37RAGTOPMAN

  Thanks
I have the box loose from the frame, the switch off the bottom and light switch rod loose but not out.

But knowing that the steering column rod stays attached is what I needed to know.

Waiting for my 35-36 ford book from this site.

Thanks Greg

You will have to remove the steering box and column from below (unless you just happen to have the soft top and wooden supports already removed). This can be done after pitman arm, frame mounting bolts, column drop bolts, light switch ball, horn/light rod, driver side floor board and steering wheel have all been removed. It's best to use the appropriate steering wheel puller to prevent damage to the steering wheel. The steering shaft with pressed on worm will remain with the box until you have the box completely disassembled.

JM Steering wheel puller is this a special puller or a three screw puller? I see three holes in the wheel but I see no threads.

Greg, some use a two or three screw/bolt puller by drilling and tapping holes in the steering wheel hub. I prefer to use a puller that comes under the hub and screws down against the nut on the threaded end of the shaft after the nut has been backed away from the wheel and is just above the top of the shaft. Screwing down against the unprotected threaded end can ruin the shaft. Another way some folks remove a steering wheel is to sit in drivers seat and put knees under hub of wheel and push up while striking the nut that's backed off to the top of threaded shaft. This method of removal can damage threads on shaft and/or damage bearings/bearing surfaces in steering box.
