Understand that the 49-53 Ford/Mercury axle shafts are not equal in length but are two different lengths. Should a person need to replace a broken axle, the longer axle shaft can be substituted for the shorter one and used on either side. However, the shorter one cannot be substituted for the longer one. Does anyone know the length of each.

Craig, check with Ray Beebe. As I recall he broke an axle at Batavia and just happened to have a spare in his trunk. He said he threw one in just before he left for the meet. He either got lucky or they are both the same length. The later Ford rears do have different length axles, but I think the 49-53 are the same length.

I don't recall the axles being different lengths. They seat in the spiders on each side, via the splines. I do recall that the outer oil seals tended to leak if they were not soaked in oil for about an hour before seating in the housing.

According to the 49-53 Parts catalog, both axles were 28" long Tom
