It seems like every time I take the front drums off and reinstall, I’m never quite sure how tight to tighten the spindle nut. I start out by turning the nut by hand as tight as I can get it and then lightly using a wrench. But to get to the next cotter key opening on the nut, I need to get on the wrench heavy. Question is, how tight do the nuts need to be.

The trick to setting preload on the front spindle nuts is to turn them down tight first to squeeze the excess grease out of the bearings, then back the nut off until the wheel just turns freely and the cotter pin hole is available, usually just 1/8 turn or less. Tapered Timken-type bearings must have this preload, and no discernable play should be observed.
