Trying to find suitable headers or specialty left side exhaust manifold for my 53 Sunliner convertible. All available seem to have interference issues with steering box and/or Fordomatic cooling duct. Does anyone make a center dump header for the left side that will not interfere with the steering box. Thanks, John Myron

I think that Red's would be the best bet. Speedway also make center dump headers, but you need to talk to someone there familiar with flatheads in the tech department. I would also recommend getting the headers that are coated. This message was edited by trjford8 on 6-22-11 @ 8:02 AM

Got the coated center dumps from Speedway and they fit nicely. Couple of more questions for you: The collector is 2.5" diameter, with a square flange. Am thinking I can go to a short radius bend on 1 3/4" or 1 1/2" tubing welded to the square companion flange. What diameter tube would you use as a minimum? Also for that good old flathead sound are Smittys the best or can do the same with flowmaster or ?

If you are installing dual exhaust, usually the most difficult piece is between the left manifold and the muffler inlet. The most effective way to do the job is to have a good muffler shop make up the pipe. That way, the pipe can be made, then tack welded to the flange in the proper position before completely finishing the connection. As to mufflers, we use common, generic glass packs. Mufflers tend to have a short life on old cars, as they are seldom driven long enough to completely dry them out.

Pat Rooney in Ohio and in roster used to make or had made the left side manifold for dual exhaust for your year as I remember,I would sure rather and have used cast iron manifolds over tinny headers anyday, don't care who makes them.

I believe he is casting a replica of the left side manifold that Ford made for police cars. Expensive, and you still will need a pipe bender to make the pipe from his manifold to the muffler. Just use the existing manifold and find a good pipe bender to make up the pipe(s) that come off the front of the manifold, clear the steering box and dipstick and then down to clear the clutch pedal arm when depressed. Keep it simple! Opps, forget the clutch pedal - Fordomatic John This message was edited by oldford2 on 7-24-11 @ 1:01 PM
