It seems they all tend to leak without modification. I filled with STP and it leaked out short order. Does the modification by brazing or soldering require the removal of the box? Or would STP mixed with Mystic grease work? I thought someone said that adding grease was not a good choice...

Installing grease was an old time way of slowing down the leakage, but tends to accelerate the wear of the worm and sector. Changing to an extension tube requires removing the bottom plate of the box to braze the tube in place. That entails removing the switch and associated wiring so the plate can come off. It isn't a simple job. The steering box is the one and only place that I use 600 weight oil. It was originally developed for the Model A's, which had no real transmission seals, and also leaked around the place where the end of the cluster shaft exited the case. Some have had luck by mixing STP with chassis grease. I'd use the fibrous rear hub grease for that purpose, and mix it until you have a consistancy of honey. In my opinion, all old Fords leak, more or less. Back in the days of dirt and gravel roads, it didn't matter. Now, it is bads form to llow the release of any car fluid anywhere, it seems.

thanks. I installed a new wiring harness a while back and remember only soldering the horn terminial, so I'll remove the plate and see how it goes. Or maybe first see if a mixture of Sta Lube and STP does any good...

My steering box leak doesn't really hold even STP or Sta Lube mixture, so I'd like to try to fix it. The body housing and bail wire bracket don't seem to be much of problem so with the proposed solution of brazing an extension tube: the plate to be removed is the box end plate that holds the shims? and the extension tube runs into the box?

The tube extends above the oil level, with the wiring thru the tube. Make a good gasket to put between the end plate and the box. I first started doing that job way back when I had Model A's. Those cars leaked everywhere, so I didn't need the steering to add to it.
