Topic: Electronic Ignition

Looking for a recommendation for an electronic ignition on my original engine. Petronix wants to know the number on the side of the distributor. I am not able to find this. Your help would be appreciated.

  I'll start.
Be prepared to also purchase extra items to make Petronix work. Their coil also.

I tried it. Fried it. Towed it home. Sent it back. They sent new. Fried that one also. Went back to tried-and-true points and condenser. Sold my second replacement at a swap meet.

But it does work for others. This is just my story.

The best ignition system for your original Ford is the dual point one that came on it from the factory. Once this distributor with points is setup properly on a distributor machine by a competent technician, it is essentially bullet proof for 15k+ miles. If you want to drive the car on extremely long trips, it is good to carry a spare original fully set up distributor with you in the car.

No direct knowledge, but my understanding is that the electronic ignition modules are very sensitive to voltage spikes. Original generators do not operate in tight voltage parameters like a modern alternator and thus produce the problem as related above by Nels01. But I have read that some have had no problem with electronic ignition; not sure how their cars are different.

Change all the plug wires and the coil wire to a carbon type non metalic wires. The original wiring will not play nice with the electronic ignition.

I appreciate all of the advice, looks like I will stay with the points etc. Thanks.
