I appreciate the response to my previous first post!. More photos since my previous post. It is still drizzling out so can't get full car pics; however, inside my garage I took a few photos posted below. I am awaiting promised documentation from the wife of the previous owner who owned this car since 1969. She did state her deceased husband always made every effort to keep the car original and kept good records. I plan on that as well. My immediate concern is no brake lights....even though head and tail lights work correctly using the center steering wheel switch.. Radio has clear sound with static, but may be old wiring connections...a later job. The spark plugs are Champion D-21. The engine oil is Sh*ll Rotella T4 15/40. Engine runs very smooth, starts quickly. Can anyone give me an idea if the 21 bolt engine is original to 1935? Thanks again....Larry

When the car was converted to hydraulic brakes, the master cylinder used may not have had a port for a hydraulic switch.

One way to get around this condition is to use a mechanical brake light switch like the one originally used with the mechanical brake system.

One vendor offering a mechanical brake light switch is C&G. Here is one shown on their website.

You may want to look on Mac VanPelt web page to identify the engine. You may have to rule out the 36 insert bearing block. Original 35 car heads are aluminum and so is the intake manifold, but that doesn't mean the engine is not 35. The V8 club has an excellent restoration book for the 35-36. Plus the club has updates to the restoration book which are valuable.
The original 35 mechanical brake stop light switch is mounted on the mounting bracket for the brake and clutch pedal under the car and is adjustable. If converted to hydraulic the switch is typically mounted at the end of the master cylinder.

  40 Coupe:
Thank you very much....I will check the Mac VanPelt web page to identify the engine. I used a magnet away from the bolts on both heads and the heads as well as the intake manifold, both seem to be iron, not aluminum; but of course as you stated before they could have been replaced later. I will also check out your information for the hydraulic brake light switch.....Again, I appreciate your kind assistance! Amazing forum!
