Topic: 46 to 48 hood spring fixes

	I have new springs on my hood hinges and the hood barely stays up. A slight breeze will code it. I had an old timer with a show car at Hershey tell me to cut the spring hook flange off and weld it 1/4” further to put more preload on the spring. Has anyone tried this remedy. I do not want the gas strut fix. I want it to look original. Thanks in advance for the replies.

	James, read my post from last week. Those springs are under a lot of tension especially when the hood is closed, so I wouldn't do any welding on them. The spring that broke on my '46 went flying down, thank goodness and didn't do any damage. I purchased a replacement spring from Dennis Carpenter and It worked fine. If I were you I would purchase two springs from Carpenter and do the job the right way. I fabricated a spring spreader to install the new spring and needed to stretch the new spring over 4 more inches to get it on. A drop of oil on the hood pivot points might help. Be careful!
