Topic: Idle RPM

Only 46 Ford sedan, manual calls for 500 rpm at idle. I keep at 600 because it seems more comfortable there.

It suddenly idles about 900 rpm. The idle adjustment screw at the side of the carb is completely backed off.

Adjustment of the air/fuel screws at the base of the carb has no effect as expected.

The accelerator pedal is not being touched by anything.

Been at this fast idle about two weeks.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Your power valve likely has a bad diaphragm, enriching the fuel/air ratio. You’ll need a new one, but take care in your selection, as the gasket mating surface on the new ones are radiused, unlike the flat surface of originals. Ask your supplier about that difference before you buy one. Upon replacement, you’ll need to re-adjust your idle screw as well as your fuel/air ratio screws.
