When I measured the voltage at the battery while the engine is running the voltage fluctuates back and forth from about 3v then to 5v then to 9v. Not exactly in that order but its all over the place and I expected it to be a fairly consistent voltage above 6v. Please forgive my ignorance but is the silver little round thing in the attached photo supposed to regulate or stabilize the generator voltage output?? The Amp gage on the instrument panel seems to be acting properly in that it is excited when I turn on the ignition, rev the engine or turn on the headlights.

I assume that you are usuing a digital meter to measure the voltage at the battery while the engine is running. Digital meters are very susceptible to interference from the high voltage ignition system. I suggest you use an analog meter for this measurement so as to get an accurate reading...

Analog meter please. The cut out disconnects the generator from the battery after the car stops. No regulation or stabilization, the voltage control is the center brush of the three brushes in the generator. Moving the brush up or down controls the voltage.

Thanks guys. I purchased an analog meter and it read a steady 6 1/2 volts at idle and even when I revved the engine. That seemed kind of low? and shouldn't it fluctuate a little, at least go up a little when I rev the engine??

I don't think your generator is putting out. Time for you to remove the cover on the cutout relay to inspect if the points are opening and closing. Also, remove the cover at the rear of the generator and inspect the brushes... Oops...You indicated in your original post that the ammeter seems to be operating properly indicating generator output... This message was edited by MG on 6-5-26 @ 7:02 PM

I remember as a kid my father moving the brush late Fall into winter due to lights on heater etc. on his customers servicing .

Hi, Here's a quick little check to see if the generator is working; start it up and disconnect the ground cable at the battery. Is it still running? Simple, I know, but tuck the thought away when done for future use. 42OINK
