What is the easiest way to install the pin into the door handle ?

You need to compress the spring loaded inner escutcheon to access the pin. Bob Drake makes a tool to compress the spring giving you access to the pin. You can fabricate a simple tool, I have used plastic trim tools to compress the spring. Once you get the spring loaded part of the escutcheon pushed in, you can drive or push the pin out and install a new one. You might need a needle nose pliers to align the new pin.
