Why did the crankshaft gear lose 9 teeth? I was simply driving normally when this happened. Will it happen again for no reason?

The crank gear or the camshaft gear?
I have never in all my years seen a crank gear lose teeth. Cam gears? Oh yeah, especially the modern reproductions.

If you want to make sure that the new camshaft gear will not lose teeth in the future, replace the fiber 44T press-on gear with an aluminum 44T bolt-on gear. This will most likely require removing the camshaft from the engine, taking it to a machine shop and having them properly index the gear to the camshaft before drilling and tapping the appropriate holes in the front of the camshaft.

Flatfoot, until you tell us if it was the cam or the crank gear that sheared, no one can give you worthy advice.

I can tell you that a gear does not shear for "no reason". There is always a reason.
Nine teeth from a crank gear? That would be incredible to have happened.
