Topic: Fuel and Vacuum Pump

Hi again, guys! I really want to thank all of you for all the great help and suggestions. I hope one day to know enough to be a valuable contributor like some of you all.

The fuel pump on my '51 is oddly intermittent. I can drive it for days and its fine, last week, and it's happened before too, the engine will suddenly starve for fuel. I installed a 6 v electric pump last year and a few times it has got me home. After last week I ordered a repair kit. When I got it on the bench, I see it's a combo fuel and vacuum pump. I've seen these on trucks before, not on cars. I think my kit for the top half will work, but to be honest it all looks like new.

My big question is a about the first and second photos. When I took the vacuum side apart it was full of oil, like a lot of oil. The gasket going back to the push rod was pretty mangled. I think it has been messed up since I found the car. I assume this bottom half is not supposed to have oil in it. I am wondering of that mangled gasket was my whole problem. The vacuum to my wipers has always sucked (no pun). I think this may be why. Do you think I'll be ok just rebuilding the top/ fuel half? I figure I'd better do that even though it looks great, since I took it apart. I'm less worried about the vacuum side. Do you think it could have been the gasket was the entire problem?

Last question: does anyone know where I can get the diaphragm and gaskets and valves for the vacuum side?

Thank you,

Bill

You will have to rebuild both sections of the fuel pump. A place that might have your kit is Then and Now Auto Parts.
