I'm rebuilding the shift tower on my '39 top loader. When I removed the two detent screws, springs and balls I noticed the shifter shafts still had spring tension and would lock into 3 detent positions just like I hadn't removed the anything. When I got the shafts out, I found they each had 6 notches, 3 facing out to the double detent ball/springs and 3 facing in towards the center plunger. The plunger was the '37 and earlier B-7233 type with a spring and not the solid 81A-7233 that should be used. Odd The shafts show some wear, so I plan on replacing them and using the solid plunger.
