Topic: Looking at a 1946 Super Deluxe coupe

  Hello all!
I am looking at a 1946 Super Deluxe short door coupe to possibly purchase. I am a prewar Buick guy and do most mechanical work on them myself but am on a steep learning curve in the Ford world. Are there any red flags I should be looking for besides the obvious stuff? Like model specific things? Thanks, and if any of y'all want to jump into prewar Buicks give me a holler!
Cheers Dave

Some details of your prospective buy would be helpful in giving good feedback. I have a ‘46 Super Deluxe Coupe that is all stock, including the 6V positive ground electrical.
Is the one you are interested in; stock, modified 6V/12V flathead 59AB engine etc..
Quite often someone will gets an old Ford and want to go with “upgrades” but I will tell you, properly maintained and tuned old Fords are quite reliable. Joining EFV8C is the first step, and you will have all kinds of support from a lot of very knowledgeable members.

Thanks for the reply! This is what I know: electrics are in original config, 6V pos gnd. . Brakes redone, master rebuilt. No mods that I can see but of course my knowledge is limited. Engine compartment and underneath are clean. Paint is an ok 20 footer. Interior has been redone but is nice. Has 94 carb and is running a gen. Radiator is aluminum replacement. Steering is a bit loose but acceptable. I am going to drive it next week but idle sounds good. I will stick a vac guage on.it then and have a temp gun to check the cooling situation.
Cheers Dave

  Dave,
The 46-48 Fords on a whole are a nice driving and riding cars. The 3-passenger coupe is also a desirable model too. For those of us in northern climates rust or poorly done rust repairs are always a concern. Rocker areas, floors, lower cowl areas near where the running boards bolt should be inspected. The normal stuff.
After say a 10 mile drive what is the oil pressure gauge reading? If it isn't reading at least 10-15 pounds it could indicate a weak sender but more likely an engine that may need overhauled. What is the temp gauge reading in that distance? Close to the middle is a good sign. Another thing that gets overlooked is wiring. It is available but is a major task to replace a complete harness. There are some things unique to the "business coupe" like the quarter moldings and the seat. Like any old car you want to make sure the model specific items are there if possible. The club's 41-48 book is a great investment.
