Some friends & I are debating the location of the fan on 39' V8's??? Deluxe seems to be on the crank, Standard seems to be below the gen??? I've done several searches and dug thru all my books but can't find a definite answer. Any help appreciated!!! TIA

To the best of my knowledge, the Deluxe 1939 85 hp engines had the fan mounted on the crankshaft pulley. The Standard 1939 vehicles had the fan mounted on the generator pulley. Deluxe 1939 Fords used a two-brush generator while the Standard models used the older three-brush generator.

All '39 deluxe had the fan mounted at the end of the crankshaft. I have attached a photo of one of my restorations. However, the fan is not yet mounted. Still, you can clearly see the end of the crankshaft (pulley) where the fan will be mounted. Mike "Kube" Kubarth This message was edited by kubes40 on 11-10-25 @ 6:18 AM

Were the batteries for the 1939 delux vs standard in different locations? Standard on fire wall and delux on the frame ?

Bet your friend the price of the new '40 restoration manual as well as the 38/39 manual available through the club. That way, you prove him wrong and get the books. I'll post some photos tonight of the battery locations. All standard models had the battery set into the dash panel, aka the firewall. All deluxe models had a battery tray on the right side of the engine bay. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

In searching for fan info, I stumbled across this article about the differences in Standard vs Deluxe!!! I have no clue how accurate it is but I enjoyed it!!! I don't have a 39', a friend bought one and that's where this question came up!!! It had several things that were not all Standard or Deluxe...a combo. He sold it. https://www.hemmings.com/stories/fraternal-fords-1939-ford-standard-and-ford-de-luxe-6/

That standard coupe in the article was restored by me for Lloyd Duzell. No surprise but the place that sold it (Volo) in Illinois misled the buyer as he (buyer) wanted a car restored by Duzell. Lloyd was past the time in life where he was capable of doing such a project and had me do that car for him. Rest assured the information I have provided in the previous posts is spot on. Here's a photo of that coupe in my driveway just days before being hauled to Lloyd's home. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Rg130, I have attached a photo depicting the battery location on the '39 standard models. This particular restoration was done for a fine gentleman in Missouri. This car had been in his family since new and had the original title. It was perhaps the best car I'd ever had the pleasure to start a restoration with. It ended up scoring 998 the first time judged at a national show. the two points were deducted for "over restoration". Mike "Kube" Kubarth This message was edited by kubes40 on 11-10-25 @ 5:53 PM

NGA, just came upon a better photo than the one I'd previously posted depicting the fan location on all '39 deluxe models. This particular car, a '39 deluxe convertible coupe is one I'd restored for a gentleman in Quebec. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

"kube", Thanks for all the info & pics!!! You do some very nice work, beautiful work!!! I'm a "shade tree" mechanic and hit & miss restorer of the Early Broncos, which helps me evaluate other people's work. Attention to detail is critical. Here's a pic of my first resto on a 74', about 20 years ago!!! Thanks again!!! This message was edited by NGABronco on 11-15-25 @ 6:04 AM

Unrelated question for Mike. I noticed that both 39s have the small voltage regulator, when did the larger voltage regulator come into use? Tom

Based on this: "Deluxe 1939 Fords used a two-brush generator while the Standard models used the older three-brush generator," Do '39 Deluxe and Standard use the same voltage regulator or different?

Tom, the rectangular design came into production early, very early, in 1940. Only a minute number of '40 Fords were equipped with the square regulator. VERY early cars did not have holes in the dash panel (aka firewall) for the rectangular unit. Then, when the rectangular units were starting to be installed on a daily basis, there were holes for both the square and the rectangular units. Ford applied what was termed "dum dum" putty over the two holes not to be utilized. In short time, those punches were removed from the dies and only the three holes for the rectangular unit were observed. ALL '39 Fords, regardless of model (standard vs. deluxe) were fitted with the square unit during production / assembly when the three-brush generator was fit. Early standard models were fitted with the two-brush generator and cut-out. Near the end of the '39 production, the three-brush generator was fitted to all models. After '39 production ceased, dealers were advised to replace the two-brush units on standard models with the three-brush unit. A special harness was available for service that lade this "swap" an easy task to accomplish. Mike "Kube" Kubarth This message was edited by kubes40 on 11-19-25 @ 12:04 PM

The 3 brush generator used a cutout. Mike had a little dyslexia when he typed his message. All 1939 Deluxe cars had the 2 brush generator and a voltage regulator. Tom

I have had many of those every day lately. I am lucky, I can blame it on "Chemo Brain" or "Senior Moment", whichever fits the situation. Tom
