I have a reman motor in my 53 Ranch wagon and I have it all tore down for the machine shop. However I have noticed that there are two different springs, and the spacers on top of the valve keepers are different. One type is a smooth cylinder with a domed top and the hole for the valve. The second type has a groove cut into it and sites on top of the keeper. I am looking to get a complete set of the of the same spaces that sit on the keepers but I don't even know what to search for. I am also unable to get the valve retaining clips out what looks to be a much stouter spring that the others. Is this normal on the 8BA? 1953 Mainline Ranch Wagon

The smooth sided valve guides are for the exhaust valves. The ones with the grove should have a rubber O-ring to seal the intake side. It looks like this engine was put together with various parts that the builder had available. You may have to cut that one valve spring to remove the clip. The spring is close to coil bind which may have caused some wear on the camshaft. The valves don't look all that good in the picture and probably will need to be replaced. I would order a complete valve kit including valves, springs, keepers, valve guides, retaining clips, valve seals, and adjustable lifters. These are available from Early ford V-8 Sales, Dennis Carpenter's, and others. Have your machine shop install hardened valve seat if your engine does not have them currently. Flatheads ain't cheap! Thanks for the info, I have been looking at the complete sets and you are correct that they aren't cheap. 1953 Mainline Ranch Wagon
