Topic: 1951 Shoebox Mechanical Switch.

Hi guys, I'm trying to break my hydraulic switch addiction. Three in the past year and they are not working very well at all.

I bought an Echlin SL128 mechanical switch. I was under the car last night and while its tight it looks it will work. My question is: has anyone else used this switch? Do you know of a better switch? Does anyone have photos of what they have done?

I was playing with my multimeter last night, and it seems there is a lot of room to mess with. The switch comes on about halfway through the total swing of the arm, so I have a lot of room to experiment. I'm thinking of cutting the arm shorter and maybe welding on a pad.

Does anyone have any better ideas? I'm all ears if tou do. Here are a couple of pictures of the switch and what I'm looking at.

As always, thank you!

Bill

Bill I use those switches all the time. I have used a piece if rubber hose that fits tight in the lever to take up some of the slack. You can also add another wider piece of metal to the lever. I mount the metal with one small screw and a nylock nut so you can adjust the metal towards your pedal arm. once adjusted you can spot weld the metal to the arm or add an extra screw so it does not come out of adjustment. I also got tired of failed switches. The mechanical switch has been on my 40 for over 7 years and still works good. Those type of switches were used for years on old Chevy pickups. I recall that Ron Francis Wire Works used to sell one that is adjustable.

Another option for a mechanical brake light switch is to use the one that was used on 1935 to 1938 Fords with mechanical brakes. C&G is one of the vendors that offers these.

I bought a hydraulic switch from Advance auto parts in 2016 with a lifetime replacement guarantee. I had silicone fluid in the system and it was still operating fine when I changed over to DOT 3 last year. I took it back to the store and they gave me a new one at no charge.

Tom brings up a good point. Auto Zone will also give you a replacement switch for free. Save their receipt from the first one.!
