What are some of the causes of clutch chatter. No chatter in forward but significant chatter in reverse. 1939 Ford

clutch adjustment, poorly made clutch or pressure plate, missing or loose anti chatter rods, loose front spring. for a few.

My '37 had "chatter" it in forward & reverse. I got a new pressure plate & clutch disc from Ft. Wayne clutch(whoom were highly recommended yrs. ago) and had the flywheel resurfaced locally. Smooth as silk after that. F F

No direct experience with Ft. Wayne Clutch but my understanding is that they now only sell off shore clutches no rebuilding service for flatheads. For rebuilds you might check out Kentucky Clutch. Some additional causes of clutch chatter are loose engine and/or transmission mounts and worn out or loose rear shock links. If the rear shock links are the cause, the chatter will be much worse in reverse.

Yes, I've also heard that Fort Wayne is not what it used to be. I would now check with VanPelt Sales. Mac carries only quality parts, no junk! F F

The motor mounts are the most common cause of the clutch chatter. I suspect that your rear mottor mounts have deteriorated. Bob Drake seems to have the most accurate reproduction of the motor mounts. Tom
