  I tried to put a six volt alternator on my 36 ford. 57 inch belt was too short and would not go on. 58 inch belt goes on but the fan hits the radiator when tightened. Any thoughts? Thanks...

  If you have room between the bottom of the alternator and the top of the intake manifold, you can elongate the slot of the mounting bracket to allow the alternator to set lower on the engine allowing the shorter belt to fit.

  I installed a 6 volt pos. ground alternator on my 36 a number of years ago. I had to add spacers, behind the fan, so the fan would line up to the recess in the radiator. I used a fiberglass fan, because of the weight of the stock fan.( alt. front bearing not designed for all that weight). I was able to use the stock belt. I changed back to the stock generator when a regulator came out to replace the cut out. System looks stock, even the regulator looks like a stock cut out. works real well. I don't have to move the third brush for different driving conditions. When I purchased the alternator kit, I was under the impression that it was just a bolt in system. You can always, if you wish, eliminate the fan and you could use an electric fan.

  I was able to get my original fan belt over the pulley on the alternator for a '36 by backing off the nut at the end of the mounting stud that holds the alternator in place, allowing me to tip the alternator forward enough to just slip the belt over the pulley. I then tightened the nut holding the alternator. And once the nut was almost snug, I even had to pry up on the alternator a little bit using a long wooden dowel as a pry bar. Too much tension can be hard on the water pump bearings.
