Some 39 and later have 2 wire connectors one on the end and one on the side. The other ones have 3 wires one on the back and 2 on the side. What years are each one for?

Ford generators for 1938 and older cars had three-brush generators which had a cutout mounted on top and three wires coming out of the generator. In 1939, standard cars had three-brush generators with three wires. The Deluxe 1939 and subsequent model year cars had two-brush generators which had two wires coming out of the generators. The two-brush generators featured a remotely mounted voltage regulator which included an internal cutout.

The second terminal on the side was added in 41. It is a ground terminal. You can also date generator main body by their date codes stamped into the steel body. The date code should be slightly earlier than the car production date.
