Hi! my 1951 Ford Custom three speed is supposed to be synchronized with in all three gears up and down. 1st to 2nd to 3rd is smooth as can be. 2nd down to 1st grinds unless I'm going about 5-7 mph and I double clutch it. 2nd is pretty low, I can do most stuff in 2nd down to even 10 mph. My clutch feels pretty good. I this normal operation or am I missing something. Thank you. I love this website! Bill

Bill, This is normal operation. Your transmission is not designed to be downshifted into first gear unless the car is stopped. Ken

Ken is correct unless you installed a newer transmission. Charlie Stephens

I believe Ford did not put syncros in 1st gear till 1961. Your situation sounds normal.
