You guys have been so good and thank you for all the help. I installed a new Optima battery yesterday. She turned over reasonably fast and fired up right away. A few hour later - same thing. I then tried to start her again after a brief trip around town without any luck - slow turn over and she didn’t fire. Jumped it and took her home. An hour later she turned over quickly and fired right up. Alternator connections look good. Possibly a bad Alternator ??? RKS

I purchased a 6volt Optima for my 36 three years ago. My car would start up and run fine however it wouldn't hold charge for very long. My supplier replaced it for another Optima and It has been fine now for three years. This may or may not be your problem but worth checking out especially if you know your charging system is ok.

"An hour later she turned over quickly and fired right up. " To my mind, that kinda rules out the alternator. The alternator doesn't do anything to turn the starter, it just recharges the battery. And you had good battery an hour later. Sometimes a starter motor going bad will work when cold but not when hot. I would suspect the starter, or possibly the electrical connections going to it.

If the starter motor is bad, would that make it turn over slower to almost nothing when hot ? RKS

I have no experience with starters other than what I have read on other peoples' problems, including starters dragging when hot. So I will let others who know about starters respond.

If your car has difficulties starting when hot but starts well when cold, you may have some problems with your ignition circuit. Check your coil, condenser and and ignition resistor for correct function when hot.

In addition to what others have suggested go over all your cables and make sure they are the correct size for 6 volts and make sure they are clean and tight. If you have the woven type ground cable look at it closely to see any evidence of corrosion.

If you're running all stock , I'd be looking at that 6v alternator. Most of us are running generators. 6v Optima's can be amazing . I've used mine for 11 years.

I would suspect the floor starter switch is going bad. Tom
