Hi All - I have a 39 Ford Deluxe (Coupe) that I bought as a project car. Unfortunately, the guy working on it had passed away so I don't have a lot of the details. This car has clearly been modified as a hot rod of sorts. I think the rear might be original but I cannot swear to that. The rear wheels definitely have a ford bolt pattern. I crawled underneath today and jotted down whatever identification info I could locate. These are as follows: (1) tag is stamped with a diamond shape followed by "G1", Another tag is stamped with "7F2", Embossed on the housing are the following: "66", "4668A", "D28W" and either "58" or "53". I would like to identify the rear (if possible) as well as the rear axle ratio. Thanks.

The original 39 Ford rear diff does not have any tags. There are some numbers stamped into the center section to identify the original gear ratio. The center section has two pipe plugs one for a fill and the second for a drain. There is no stamped steel cover on the rear of the center section.

Some photos attached. Perhaps the word stamped was a misnomer. The data is cast into the housing (though there are definitely two tags). I will post more pictures on the other response. Thanks.

More photos attached. One of the "tags" I spoke about can be seen in the first photo. There is a fill hole on top of the housing and a drain hole on the bottom (slightly off center towards the driver's side). Thanks.

Assuming by a Ford bolt pattern you mean 5 on 5 1/2. So If that's the case my guess is that it's out of a Ford 1/2 ton pickup which if I'm not mistaken would mean it's a Ford 9 inch. If it's 5 on 4 1/2 it could be a Ford 8 inch. Check over on the Ford Barn or the HAMB for a definite answer if someone here doesn't know for sure. ______________ No signature

Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention, there are (10) bolts around the perimeter of the housing (holding it together). That may be useful information.

Check out this post on the HAMB especially post #3 https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/differences-between-ford-8inch-and-9inch-rears.641672/ Edit: This forum is more for original un modified cars. The Ford Barn and the HAMB will have more info for early Fords that have been modified. This doesn't mean you won't find helpful info here, cause you will but the other sites will have good info as well.
