I believe the dipstick on my ‘33 Flathead is original. It appears that oil “pops” out of the dipstick tube/pipe when running or under acceleration. Is the some sort of grommet that the dipstick can slip through to prevent any leaks or an alternate dipstick with an attachment to lengthen the tube ? RKS

Ignore this reply. The correct information is in the next 2 replies. There should be a leather seal on the dipstick. Your problem is not the missing seal, it is too much pressure in the crankcase. Make sure that the breather on the oil fill tube is clean and not filled with hardened carbon from oil fumes. Check the slots in the breather discharge on the oil pan. It is the small triangle at the front of the oil pan. The slots must be open. You may also have worn or stuck rings causing the excess oil pan pressure. A compression test would show this. You could also have sludge build up in the breather passages. Tom This message was edited by TomO on 11-21-24 @ 4:54 PM

If the hole in your bracket attached to your oil pan is threaded and a tube is attached in which the dipstick is inserted, then your oil pan is not a '33, but rather it is a '34 (or later if your engine block is post '34). Either way, nothing in the way of a seal was added to Ford V8 dipsticks until the 1935 model year and given that the '35 plus dipstick is nearly twice as wide as the various '33-'34 dipsticks, that's not an alternative. (And those '35 plus asbestos seals aren't 100 per cent effective.) Perhaps a neoprene washer that fits snugly around the two semi-circular halves of your '34 dipstick at the bottom of the handle portion where it inserts into the tube might work.

There is no felt or seal on the dip stick for 33-34. If oil is coming out of the end of the tube there is another problem. A photo of what you have would be good. There is no breather on the oil pan for 33-34, nor is there a screen on the breather to become plugged. This message was edited by 40 Coupe on 11-19-24 @ 4:55 AM
