Rebuilt 81A with sleeves taken out. Used 0.080 pistons and new rings (4 ring pistons). Other people have worked on the carbs and ignition. Owner is running 2 97's, both at the same time. Exhaust shows high residuals of dry carbon as do the plugs. (I swear it smells like it's running rich.) He is running H-10's plugs. Any thoughts?

What size Main Metering Jets (MMJs) are in the carburetors. You might want to go down a size or two to lean out the mixture. Another thing you can do is go to the next size or two leaner on the power valves. The leaner power valves come in at a lower manifold vacuum. With two carburetor acting in unison you will have less manifold vacuum to keep the power valves operating properly. You might find that they are open under road load conditions which will cause an overly rich mixture and waste fuel.
