hi! I'm looking for info on the cowl vent mechanism for a 41 deluxe coupe. since I replaced the gasket, I'm having difficulty adjusting and sealing the cover.

Some gaskets have been known to be too thick.

Can not comment re adjusting your vent mechanism but (and not joking) an old post here recommended placing a brick or two on a piece of cloth on the vent (when car not in-use) to get the gasket to seal-in and vent cover to lay flush.

The gasket will not seal if you did not clean the old material and glue from the trough where the gasket sits. You should see the paint color all around the area.

To adjust the lid, set the handle to the point where the lid is almost closed. Loosen the bolts holding the lid to the mechanism, then have someone put pressure on the lid so it meets the gasket evenly. Then tighten the bolts, open and close the lid. Then check for leaks.

what's better than a brick is a screw jack between a ceiling joist and the cowl cover. I've tried all u guys said, and I'm still having trouble making the cover come down flush. It still tends to nose dive in the front, leaving a small gap in the rear. I've taken the whole assembly out, apart, and inspected for wear, to no avail. If I could see an assembly diagram, maybe I'll find something obvious (or Not). either way, if I take my coupe out in the rain , my feet will get wet.

My guess is that the cover is bent. It should come down evenly.

The cover's not bent. It comes down evenly and seals under pressure. It's when I tighten up the 4 bolts for the cover and the other 4 bolts for the cover plate that it goes out of whack. I'm searching for a diagram to identify parts to see if my assembly is incorrect or bent or something else.

Here is a drawing of the 1942 cowl vent mech. It is very similar to your 41 mechanism. If the front end if the cover is dipping when you tighten the bolts, something is bent, either the cover or the bracket that it bolts to. The handle should not be in the fully closed position when you adjust the cover and snug the bolts up.
