Topic: speedometer off slow 6-7 MPH

flatfoot    -- 08-06-2024 @ 8:56 AM
I'm in Redding, CA. trying find a shop that will fix my original speedometer. It reads 35 mph and I'm going 40-41 mph. I am trying to locate a shop in this area that will calibrate and fix the speedo. Anybody have any ideas where I might find a shop willing to work on it? I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thank you.

Is it that you have installed different from stock wheels and tires?...

Not local but Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado repaired the SW speedometer in my '39 p/u. dead nuts on according to my dash cam display. Fair price and fast turn around.

I'm with MG on this. Prior to calibrating the speedometer, you need to figure out the diameter of the rear tires and then check to be certain whether or not you have the correct speedometer driven gear installed respective of the tires.

What year and type of vehicle do you have? We might be able to determine what driven gear you need to get your speedometer to read more accurately. From your description, it looks like your speedometer is reading about 85% of the speed the vehicle is travelling.

I agree with carcrazy. You should try the next lower gear count on the speedo driven gear. That should make the cable spin faster.

No. Tires and wheels are original tire size and wheels are factory.

flatfoot    -- 08-08-2024 @ 10:01 AM
Tires and wheels are stock from factory.

I have a 1936 Ford Sedan 4dr. It has everything stock except the transmission is 1939 Ford.

Check the odometer over a measured mile. If it is off by the same amount you probably have the wrong drive gear (the one that attaches to the torque tube) for the speedometer.

CHARLIE, THE "TURTLE" IS THE DRIVEN GEAR, NOT THE DRIVE GEAR.

  Flatfoot,
There were different tire and wheel combinations offered from the factory.
So, again, I would ask, what size tires do you have?

  Mike,

Tire size wouldn't complete the picture if we don't know the rear end ratio and I doubt he knows that.

Hello all, I just became the proud owner of a 1935 4-door. The speedo does not work. I do have rotation of cable at end by speedo. I have zero history or anything other than a set of keys and the title. I’m hoping speedo is good but speedo cable is wrong or not engaged. Any help is appreciated.

  Howie,

Welcome and congratulations on a beautiful new car! I would suggest you start a new thread so members can pay attention to your issues specifically.

  Howie,

First welcome. Your car looks great. Now a couple of suggestions.
1. Put your general location and email into your profile.
2. Start a new discussion and delete this one. Otherwise, it will soon become difficult to know if comments relate to your problem or flatfoot’s problem.
3. Join a local club if you haven’t already (see https://www.earlyfordv8.org/Regional_Club_Directory.cfm). Ask if anyone has a speedometer they could loan you to see if that is where the problem is located.
