  Hello all,

This is a public service announcement

I took delivery of my 1936 Sedan Convertible this past winter. It’s a beautiful car, but it had a few issues to be worked out. One of which was to address a pretty bad leak from the rear of the gear box. After removing the shift tower, I discovered that whoever rebuilt this transmission flipped the slinger washer backwards at the rear of the gear box, allowing gear oil to pour into the clamsh*ll and leak out the bottom. To correct this, you MUST pull the transmission. To remove the transmission, you MUST pull the rear axel or the motor. I elected to pull the tranny with the motor. A lot of work to flip a $5.00 slinger washer around. First photo shows my gear box with the slinger flipped in the wrong position. Second photo is the correct position

If you choose to rebuild your transmission, make sure you pay attention to these small details. It will save you a lot of work down the road.

Before you put your transmission back together make sure you have a good tight seal between the countershaft and the transmission case and also between the reverse idler shaft and the case. Some people even cut grooves in these shafts and install O-rings to prevent leaks.
