I purchased a special tool that depresses the spring collar on the trim ring and it has a center punch to drive the pin out. I read on the internet the pins are tapered. If this is true, how do you know which way to drive the pin out? When I push the spring ring back, I can’t see well enough to tell if one side is larger or not. Thanks in advance for the reply.

No the pin is not tapered, it will come out from ether side.
