I have a dual 97 carb intake (see pic) on my 48 59A flathead. I recently purchased a 48 Evans 3x2 intake. (see pic) I noticed that the 2x2 intake has 10 intake bolts into the head and the Evan has 8 bolts into the head. The 8 bolts line up with 8 in the 2x2 intake and the ports on the intakes to the heads are the same. Question is what's the deal with 10 or 8 bolts? It looks like the heads and the gaskets match up, there are just two extra holes as if some intakes require them. This message was edited by usered on 3-10-23 @ 7:45 AM

I am no expert in design or the physics of how pressure is applied when items are attached.. but I am guessing the 8 bolt per side intake is designed that sufficient pressure will be applied when the bolts either side of the 2 bolt holes not being used have been torqued properly. The large intake/exhaust runner probably has the integrity to span the distance and provide the seal required. Just my thoughts.

From what I have learned the early Flathead V-8s (1948 and earlier) had 10 bolts retaining the intake manifold to the block on each side. The later V-8s had only 8 bolts on each side.
